A Refurbishment Within a Historic Laboratory

OA are currently delivering the refurbishment and conversion of two floors within the Grade II listed Townsend Building in Oxford’s Science Area. 

The project transforms a series of former laboratories and small offices into contemporary open-plan workspace for new research groups, carefully balancing modern performance requirements with the character of the early 20th-century building.

As part of the strip-out works, suspended ceilings, obsolete services and later interventions have been removed. In the process, a number of original stone balancing tables on the first floor were revealed and assessed - substantial, weighty fixtures that speak directly to the building’s scientific heritage.

Designed for Accuracy

In physics and laboratory environments, precision instruments - particularly analytical balances and sensitive measuring equipment - are highly vulnerable to vibration. Even slight movement transmitted through a floor can affect readings and compromise experimental accuracy.

For this reason, laboratories have traditionally employed dense stone slabs - often granite or marble - mounted independently to provide stable, vibration-resistant platforms. The mass of the stone absorbs and dampens movement, creating a controlled surface for delicate experimental work.

The balancing tables within the Townsend Building align with this long-established approach. Their material weight and permanence reflect a period when experimental rigour depended not only on scientific method, but on the physical stability of the laboratory environment itself.

Retaining Evidence of Scientific Use

While many internal elements of the building have evolved over the past century to meet changing research needs, these stone tables remain as rare physical artefacts of its early laboratory use.

Rather than removing them as redundant fixtures, the refurbishment integrates them into the new workplace layout. In doing so, the project acknowledges that heritage within scientific buildings is not confined to façades and staircases - it also resides in the infrastructure that enabled discovery.

The retained balancing tables offer a quiet but meaningful link between the building’s early experimental life and its future as a home for world-leading research.
