Architecture for learning, research and campus life

Universities are complex, evolving environments that must support learning, research, living and social interaction - often simultaneously.

We design buildings and spaces that respond to these overlapping demands, creating environments that inspire curiosity, support collaboration and operate efficiently within busy academic settings.

Our work spans teaching and research facilities, libraries, student accommodation, sports buildings and administrative spaces, each carefully tailored to the academic, social and operational needs of the institution.

Working across historic and contemporary estates

Much of our work within universities involves working on established estates, where new buildings, extensions and refurbishments must sit comfortably alongside structures of architectural and historic significance.

We have extensive experience delivering sensitive interventions within listed buildings and conservation areas, as well as new academic facilities that respond to the character, constraints and ambitions of their wider campus context.

This approach allows universities to evolve their estates thoughtfully - balancing preservation with progress while safeguarding the qualities that define their identity.

New architecture for contemporary campuses

Alongside historic estates, many universities are delivering ambitious new facilities to support growth, modern teaching methods and advanced research.

We design contemporary academic buildings that are clear, flexible and robust - responding to both functional requirements and the wider urban or campus setting.

Whether delivering major new-build facilities or stand-alone campus buildings, our focus is on creating architecture that is legible, adaptable and capable of supporting long-term academic use.

Specialist refurbishment and targeted intervention

Universities frequently require complex refurbishment and upgrade projects to maintain safety, performance and functionality across their estates. We have extensive experience delivering carefully targeted interventions - from internal reconfiguration and building upgrades to major structural and envelope works - often within sensitive or highly constrained contexts.

These projects demand rigorous technical analysis, clear stakeholder engagement and a detailed understanding of how buildings are used, ensuring that interventions are proportionate, effective and deliver lasting value.

Designing for adaptability and long-term use

Teaching, research and student expectations continue to evolve, placing increasing pressure on university buildings to remain flexible and resilient over time. Our designs prioritise adaptability, durability and long-term performance, allowing buildings to respond to changing pedagogies, technologies and patterns of use.

By embedding flexibility within layouts, structure and servicing strategies, we help universities future-proof their estates and reduce the need for disruptive or costly alterations.

Delivering within live academic environments

University campuses rarely pause. Many of our projects are delivered within fully operational academic environments, requiring careful planning, phasing and coordination to minimise disruption to teaching, research and student life.

We work closely with estates teams, contractors and stakeholders to manage access, safety and programme, ensuring that projects are delivered efficiently while the campus continues to function around the works.

A legacy of academic architecture

Our work within universities spans generations of academic architecture, from significant historic buildings to contemporary campus environments.

This depth of experience allows us to approach each project with perspective - understanding both the responsibilities of working within academic heritage and the opportunities to shape its future.

“OA delivered a pragmatic solution to replace over 8,000m² of RAAC roof structure across our Grade I listed campus. Their leadership through planning, listed building consent and construction has been exemplary, guiding a complex heritage project with skill, care and outstanding technical competence.”
