Environments designed around individual needs

Designing for SEN and SEMH settings requires a nuanced understanding of how space, light and materiality affect behaviour, emotional regulation and learning. We design calm, legible environments that reduce anxiety and provide pupils with a sense of safety, consistency and belonging.

Our work is informed by direct experience of delivering specialist provision within both new and existing school buildings, where careful calibration of scale, colour and spatial hierarchy plays a critical role in supporting vulnerable learners.

Balancing structure, safety and dignity

SEN and SEMH environments must provide clear boundaries while remaining welcoming and non-institutional. We design buildings that feel ordered and predictable, using clear circulation, simple layouts and robust detailing to support safe use without creating a clinical atmosphere.

Material selection and finishes are carefully considered to withstand intensive daily use while maintaining warmth and tactility. This balance between durability and dignity is essential in environments supporting pupils who may be dis-regulated or anxious.

Spaces that support learning, behaviour and wellbeing

Learning environments are designed to support a range of teaching approaches - from small-group classrooms and one-to-one spaces to intervention rooms and quiet areas for withdrawal or de-escalation.

Particular attention is paid to acoustics, daylight and visual simplicity, recognising their significant impact on concentration and behaviour.

Outdoor spaces are treated as an extension of the learning environment, providing access to fresh air, movement and views that support wellbeing and sensory regulation in a controlled and secure setting.

“OA provided a client-focused approach, applying their extensive experience with historic buildings to guide the project. They offered innovative design options that extended the asset life while remaining mindful of tight budgets, and consistently provided clear, prompt communication.”

Adaptable schools for evolving needs

SEN and SEMH provision often evolves as pupil cohorts, educational models and funding structures change. We design flexible buildings that can adapt over time - whether through reconfigurable teaching spaces, phased delivery or the sensitive reuse of existing buildings.

Our experience transforming historic and mid-20th-century school buildings into specialist provision demonstrates how adaptability and long-term value can be embedded within even the most constrained sites

Collaborative, informed design

Successful SEN and SEMH schools are shaped through close collaboration. We work alongside educators, therapists, local authorities and estates teams to ensure that safeguarding, operational and educational requirements are fully integrated into the design.

This partnership-led approach ensures that buildings are not only compliant, but genuinely supportive - environments where staff are empowered to deliver care and education, and pupils are given the best possible opportunity to engage, develop and thrive.
