A collaborative Studio Culture
OA is a collaborative, welcoming and ambitious practice, where design thinking is central to everything we do.
Our studios are places to share ideas, test thinking and learn from one another - whether that’s around a desk, in a design review, or over a coffee. We work in close-knit studio teams that embed themselves in their local context, building strong relationships with clients, users and communities. This studio-first approach creates an environment where people feel supported, heard and encouraged to contribute, regardless of role or experience.
Learning, mentoring and career development
At OA we are committed to supporting learning at every stage of an architectural career.
We run regular CPD sessions - typically weekly or fortnightly - covering a wide range of topics from design and technical delivery to practice-wide knowledge sharing. We actively mentor and support Architectural Assistants through their Part 2 and Part 3 qualifications, encouraging progression and long-term career development within the practice. Structured quarterly reviews with line managers provide regular opportunities for feedback, reflection and goal-setting, forming part of a wider annual review process.
Inclusivity and supporting people into architecture
Across OA, inclusivity shapes both how we work together and how we support people into the profession.
Each year, we mentor 3 - 5 final-year students through the RIBA Future Architects programme with the University of the West of England, offering insight into professional practice, site experience and career pathways. We also host 5 - 6 work-experience students annually from a wide range of backgrounds - often their first experience inside an architectural studio. Beyond the practice, our team contributes to mentoring schemes such as Arts Emergency and networks including Women in Architecture. Internally, we are implementing Mental Health First Aiders in every studio, recognising that inclusive design starts with inclusive, supportive workplaces.
Studio life, socials and shared experiences
Life at OA extends beyond project work. We value the social side of studio life and the connections it builds across the practice.
Studio life at OA is shaped by strong working relationships and a genuine sense of community. Alongside our project work, we make time to bring people together through a mix of studio-led events, informal gatherings and shared experiences across the year. These moments create space to step back from day-to-day pressures, strengthen connections across teams and studios, and celebrate the people behind our work. Whether through conversation, collaboration or simply time spent together outside the studio, this social dimension is an important part of how we sustain an open, supportive and enjoyable place to work.
