RAAC Roofing Replacement St Catherine's College

St Catherine's College is one of the world's most significant examples of post-war Modernist architecture, designed by Danish architect Arne Jacobsen and protected as a Grade I listed building. OA was appointed to develop a sensitive remediation strategy for the widespread use of Reinforced Autoclaved Aerated Concrete (RAAC), affecting over 8,000m² of roof structures across the College's iconic campus. Working closely with the College, Oxford City Council, Historic England and other key stakeholders, the project balances essential structural intervention with the preservation of Jacobsen's original architectural vision.

The carefully developed design replaces the deteriorating roof structures while retaining the character and significance of the original buildings, incorporating discreet upgrades to glazing, building services and biodiversity where appropriate. Delivered in phases to minimise disruption to College life, the project ensures the long-term future of one of the UK's most important listed Modernist buildings, allowing it to continue supporting teaching, research and student life for generations to come.
