Proposal for Arts and Crafts Transformation House at Boars Hill

About

Set within the leafy surroundings of Boars Hill, Oxford, this proposal involves the comprehensive refurbishment and transformation of a 1930s Arts and Crafts residence. The design seeks to celebrate the architectural character of the original property while introducing a refined contemporary aesthetic, creating a modern family home that balances traditional detailing with contemporary living.

The proposals include extensive internal reconfiguration, carefully considered extensions, a loft conversion and the transformation of the existing garage to provide additional accommodation across three levels. A key focus of the design is strengthening the relationship between the house and its landscaped gardens, introducing generous glazing, improved natural light and open, flowing living spaces. Contemporary aluminium-framed windows with Georgian influences complement the property's original character, creating a cohesive architectural language throughout.

Sustainability and energy efficiency are central to the proposals, with significant improvements to the existing building fabric, including external wall insulation and upgraded glazing, alongside the introduction of underfloor heating. The result is a sensitive yet ambitious transformation that preserves the character of the original Arts and Crafts residence while creating a comfortable, energy-efficient family home suited to modern living.
