Contemporary Retail Development Princes Road, Wells

OA completed a contemporary, sustainable and elegant retail development in the centre of Wells for Tincknell Property on a derelict brownfield site. 

The development led to the creation of 2 new retail units with associated parking for cars, motorcycles and bicycles on Princes Road. The building’s form and palette of materials were kept intentionally simple. The design composition of the development reflects the former building but updates it through materials, construction technique and technology. The building features a single fully glazed front façade that carries across the whole of the building frontage. This allows maximum exposure of the business by day or night. This transparency of form and ability to see through will make the build feel lightweight and blur the boundaries between the inside and outside forecourt area. Reinforcing this lightness is the cantilevered roof cladding extending out over the façade providing a high level canopy or threshold to those entering and exiting the building.

This contemporary retail building has improved the area’s appearance whilst maintaining the local character. In addition, it will provide the community with additional amenities and jobs. This development has already started to revitalise and enhance the character of Princes Road in a positive manner.
