Beyond Compliance: Building Safety and Competency
Bringing the Built Environment Together
OA Architecture and Rise4 recently hosted the first in a new series of Breakfast Exchanges, bringing together representatives from Oxford's colleges and built environment professionals to discuss Competency in the Built Environment: Beyond Compliance.
The discussion explored the practical implications of the Building Safety Act, examining how professional competence, accountability and effective decision-making can contribute to safer buildings throughout their lifecycle.
From Compliance to Accountability
Key themes included the importance of appointing and maintaining competent project teams, undertaking effective due diligence and recording the reasoning behind design decisions.
Particular attention was given to the challenges of working with historic buildings, where improvements to safety, accessibility and energy performance must be balanced with the conservation of significant architectural fabric. The discussion reinforced that building safety extends beyond demonstrating regulatory compliance, requiring continuous consideration of risk and responsibility from design and construction through to occupation and maintenance. The Breakfast Exchange series will continue to provide a forum for sharing knowledge and addressing challenges across the built environment.
