Restoration Complete at Castle Cary Station
Celebrating Castle Cary’s railway heritage
The restoration and refurbishment of Castle Cary Station for Great Western Railway is now complete.
Originally opened in 1856, the station has served the region’s railway network for almost 170 years, with successive alterations gradually concealing elements of its original character. Working alongside historic railway architecture specialist David Redfern, OA has helped uncover and celebrate this heritage through a carefully considered programme of conservation and refurbishment.
A historic station for today’s passengers
The project has restored the Ticket Office, Waiting Rooms and WC facilities, removing unsympathetic later interventions and reinstating original architectural features, materials and detailing.
Alongside these heritage works, a redesigned ticket office, upgraded accessible facilities, new access ramp and automatic doors improve the passenger experience and ensure the station can meet contemporary operational and accessibility requirements while retaining its distinctive historic identity.
