Revealing Volume: Exposing the Original Ceilings at the Townsend Building
Recovering Jackson’s Spatial Intent
When the Townsend Building opened in 1910 as Oxford’s Electrical Laboratory, it was conceived as a series of generous, well-proportioned spaces designed to support both teaching and experimental work. Over time, as the demands of scientific research evolved, suspended ceilings and service installations were introduced, gradually lowering and compressing the original rooms.
As part of the current refurbishment, these later interventions have been carefully removed to reveal the original ceiling forms above. The effect is transformative: spaces that had felt constrained regain their height and clarity, allowing the architectural proportions to be read once again.
Restoring Architectural Legibility
The Townsend Building was designed with strong, ordered volumes that reflected both the dignity of its institutional setting and the progressive ambitions of early 20th-century science. Subsequent subdivision and service integration, while necessary for laboratory use, obscured much of that intent.
By exposing beams, soffits and structural form, the refurbishment restores a sense of legibility to the interiors. Rather than concealing new services behind fresh suspended ceilings, the design adopts a more honest strategy: services are expressed within the open-plan environment, while acoustic elements are introduced selectively and lightly.
This approach preserves the historic void while allowing the building to perform to modern standards.
Adaptation, Not Reversion
The Townsend Building has always evolved alongside the science it houses. Exposing the original ceilings is not about returning the building to a single moment in time, but about allowing past and present to coexist.
The newly revealed structure offers a visible connection to the building’s early life - ensuring that its architectural character remains evident as it continues to support the next generation of research.
