New Model Design for Complex Care Rotherham Care Home

Designed for a specialist healthcare provider, this pioneering complex care facility delivers six bespoke new-build apartments within a carefully planned residential setting. Developed as a new model for complex care, the scheme supports individuals with a learning disability and/or autism whose needs and behaviours require a highly robust, specialist environment. As the first of a repeatable model intended for wider rollout, the project establishes a new approach to delivering person-centred care closer to home, enabling residents to live in a setting that feels domestic, therapeutic and supportive rather than institutional.

At the heart of the scheme is a move away from traditional group living towards single-person apartments that promote dignity, independence and tailored support. Each apartment provides its own bedroom, en-suite, lounge/diner and kitchenette, alongside access to either a communal garden or a private outdoor space depending on individual need. Shared amenities, including a communal lounge, kitchen and laundry, encourage social interaction where appropriate, while the building is organised into clear entrance, service and residential zones to support both safe operation and intuitive navigation.

The design has been shaped by extensive research into environments for people with autism and complex behavioural needs, with a strong focus on reducing sensory overload and creating a calm, supportive setting. Careful attention has been given to lighting, acoustics, glare reduction, sightlines and the separation of noisy support spaces from quieter residential areas. Robust, high-specification fittings and anti-ligature detailing are integrated throughout, ensuring the building is safe, durable and fit for purpose while maintaining a warm, residential character. The result is a highly specialist environment that supports recovery, builds independence and provides a meaningful step-down from hospital into community-based living.
