Forming part of the national DSPD programme, a joint initiative between the Department of Health, the Ministry of Justice and the Prison Service, the Paddock Centre is a one of two unique high security hospital facilities within the UK. The building is dedicated to delivering treatment to patients who are diagnosed with dangerous and severe personality disorders. As no clinical model or design guidance was available for this unique building, an in-house team developed the brief from first principles.
The seventy bed unit provides a wide range of therapeutic, educational, social and recreational facilities. The unit comprises six 12-bedroom wards, each with its own facilities and secure courtyard. Single patient bedrooms are provided with en-suite facilities and open directly onto shared communal space, designed to create an impression of space. Designed to respond to and make best use of the sloping site, the building takes a linear form following the contours of the land.
