We have been appointed to provide a regeneration plan for Barnstaple Town Centre. One of the most significant sites of this project is the refurbishment of a Grade II Listed Building and provision of new town centre dwellings in a new build next to the historic building.
This scheme will restore and renovate the historic 36 Boutport Street and redevelop number 37 into an exciting mixed-use development comprising workspace and flats, while creating a vital pedestrian gateway to the town from Queen Street car park. No. 36 is badly damaged by dry rot and neglect over the years. The meticulous refurbishment and revival of Number 36 highlight the significance of preserving historical integrity while embracing modern enhancements. The project involves the careful restoration of lath and plaster ceilings and walls, ensuring the original charm is maintained. Existing walls will be repointed with precision, reviving their structural and aesthetic appeal. A new roof is constructed with a special design to accommodate bat roosting and hibernation, showcasing a commitment to both heritage and wildlife conservation. When No. 37 was completely damaged by fire, we planned to reuse iron brackets, columns, and stone lintels from the original façade and incorporate them into the design. This thoughtful and detailed approach underscores the dedication to preserving the building’s legacy while adapting it for contemporary use.
