Revisiting Bromham Community Hub
A Community Rebuilt Following Loss
It was a pleasure to return to Bromham Community Hub and see first-hand how quickly the building has become an established part of village life since officially opening in October 2025. For the OA team, revisiting completed projects is always rewarding, particularly when the spaces are being actively used and enjoyed by the communities they were designed to serve.
The project was born out of challenging circumstances. Following the loss of the former Bromham Social Centre and Owl Community Pub to a devastating fire in June 2021, Bromham Parish Council's Rebuild Committee set out an ambitious vision to replace these much-loved facilities with a new community hub capable of serving both current and future generations.
Designing a New Community Hub for Bromham
OA were appointed to develop proposals for a new community hub building alongside a wider masterplan for the site. Working closely with the Rebuild Committee, and latterly Bromham Community Hub CIO, the team helped guide the project through design development, planning and technical design stages.
The resulting single-storey building has been designed to provide a flexible and welcoming destination for local residents. At its heart is a multi-use hall supported by an associated bar and kitchen, alongside adaptable lounge and café spaces that can accommodate a wide range of community activities, events and gatherings.
The design focuses on creating efficient, multi-functional spaces capable of meeting the evolving needs of the village while reintroducing facilities that had been sorely missed following the loss of the previous buildings.
Architecture Rooted in Its Rural Setting
The hub has been carefully positioned to maximise views across the surrounding Wiltshire countryside, creating a strong connection between the building and its rural setting. Large areas of glazing help bring natural light into the internal spaces while framing views across the fields to the south and west.
Sustainability was also an important consideration throughout the design process. The building's form and orientation were developed to maximise opportunities for solar photovoltaic panels, helping to reduce operational energy demands and support the long-term environmental performance of the facility.
Seeing the Community Hub in Use
One of the most satisfying aspects of architectural practice is seeing a project transition from concept and construction into everyday use. Returning to Bromham Community Hub provided an opportunity to see exactly that.
The building has quickly re-established itself as a focal point for village life, providing a welcoming venue for social events, community activities and day-to-day gatherings. Seeing the spaces occupied and enjoyed by local residents demonstrates the value that well-designed community architecture can bring and highlights the important role such facilities play in supporting thriving, connected communities.
As architects, there is no better measure of a project's success than seeing it actively used by the people it was designed for.
