60's Gem Revitalised
Sensitive refurbishment of a Grade II listed modernist home
We were pleased to have completed the refurbishment and extension of Parkham Wood House, a Grade II listed 1960s home in Brixham, Devon.
Designed by Devon architect Mervyn Seal and set dramatically across a cliff face, the house is recognised for its butterfly roofs, extensive glazing and carefully detailed interiors. Listed in 2009 and located within a Conservation Area, it represents an important example of post-war residential modernism.
Preserving character, enhancing performance
Our design approach focused on protecting the integrity of the original building while enabling modern living. A single-storey extension introduces an additional bedroom and shower room, echoing the existing roof geometry and material palette.
The façade and Crittall windows were restored, Parana pine ceilings retained, and a new heating system installed to improve performance. Internally, the house was carefully refurbished, ensuring this distinctive 1960s home continues to thrive for years to come.
