With the scaffolding now removed at 36 and 37 Boutport Street, the renewed façades are once again visible within Barnstaple’s historic town centre.
The moment marks a significant step forward for the project, allowing the architectural approach - shaped by both conservation and contemporary intervention - to be fully appreciated as works continue toward completion.
Balancing heritage and new intervention
Set within a sensitive heritage context, No. 36 remains listed, while No. 37 was previously de-listed following extensive fire damage.
The proposals reinstate the scale and presence of the original building, including the distinctive mansard roof form, while expressing a confident modern identity. The development will provide commercial uses at ground level with new homes above, alongside an improved pedestrian connection between Barnstaple Central Car Park and Butchers Row - helping to strengthen movement and activity across the town centre.
