A Third Incubator for Science Creates
We are delighted to see the completion of OMX - our third Deep Tech incubator delivered for Science Creates in Bristol.
The 30,000 sq ft project transforms an existing industrial building into a high-quality environment for growing science and technology start-ups, providing flexible laboratory, office and collaboration spaces tailored to the needs of emerging businesses.
Designed for Collaboration
The internal layout was carefully designed to support interaction, flexibility and shared working.
Laboratories and office spaces are arranged around a central circulation spine and double-height foyer, helping foster a sense of openness and connectivity throughout the building. A top-floor event space, bar and informal breakout areas further support collaboration and community building, while bespoke furniture by The Real Wood Project introduces warmth and craftsmanship to the shared spaces.
All laboratories are directly connected to their associated offices, while the building is mechanically ventilated via an external plant room to support the technical requirements of the incubator environment.
Transforming the Existing Building
Externally, the building has been comprehensively reimagined through the introduction of large areas of curtain glazing and extensive recladding works.
These interventions significantly improve the building’s appearance along the main road, increase natural daylight internally and enhance overall thermal performance through reduced U-values and upgraded envelope performance. Rooflights, improved glazing and PV panels further contribute to the building’s long-term energy efficiency.
The surrounding landscape and external areas were also upgraded to encourage more sustainable patterns of movement and occupation, including secure cycle storage, EV charging provision and new landscaped seating areas
Delivering Through Technical Complexity
Appointed from RIBA Stage 4 onwards, we worked closely with the wider consultant and contractor team to take the project through detailed design and delivery.
Early and ongoing coordination with building control was essential in resolving challenges relating to fire strategy, accessibility, circulation and the constraints of the existing structure, while ensuring the original design vision was retained throughout construction.
Despite the limitations posed by the condition of the existing building, the completed scheme delivers a flexible, future-ready workspace aligned closely with Science Creates’ operational needs and long-term ambitions.
A Reuse-First Approach
Sustainability was central to the project from the outset, with a strong reuse and retrofit strategy adopted to extend the life of the existing structure and reduce embodied carbon.
By retaining and upgrading the original building rather than replacing it, the scheme demonstrates how industrial buildings can be successfully adapted to support highly technical contemporary uses while contributing positively to wider environmental goals.
